One of the hardest things an umpire has to do sometimes is keep quiet.  There are 13 scenarios where an umpire is NOT allowed to enforce a rule unless the offending coach/players noted the infraction and ask the umpire to enforce the rule.  Do all the coaches/players know this?  These include missed bases, leaving too soon on a tag up, batting out of order, etc..

    • Dead Ball/Live Ball
There are rules which cause all play to cease.  Others we note the infraction, but don't enforce the outcome until all place ceases.  We all know that you can't take back a dead ball once it has been called.  It is one of those "bet your life" scenarios when we call it.

One of the most advanced rules in softball requires common sense approach to enforcement.  Being a rule totally enforced by umpire judgement, there are many variations as to what umpires look for.

    • Pitching
One of the simplest acts in the game has one of the longest rules in the book.  The rule has areas where judgement come into play.  Also, there are some "rules" which aren't always enforced?  The rulebook doesn't tell us that we have to "warn" pitchers, so does it make sense to do so??
