Update 1: Change in Pick-Off Movement for throwback from the catcher – Both 3 & 4 Umpire System (Page 2)

Mechanic Update:
On a pick off (throw back) at 1st base when U1’s starting position is off the line in foul territory behind 1st base. U1 moves forward from the starting position to a position, 3-4 metres (10-12 feet) back and on a 45 degree line through 1st base in foul territory.

The purpose of this movement is to have vision in the gap between the defensive and the offensive players, offering a clear look at precisely if and when a tag was applied. This is an exception (like using 3rd base extended at HP on a throw from the left side of the field) to the leading edge theory.

Update 2: New diagrams (shown below) clarify option for PU to read play in front of them and cover 3rd or retreat to cover home in 4-Umpire System if U2 or U3 goes out (Page 13, 14, 23)

Mechanic Update:
P – Move to the holding position; be prepared to move back to the plate for the call at home or bounce inside for a possible call at 3rd base

The PU has a great view of the play and the runner advancing towards and around 3rd base. They should judge as to whether the initial play might happen at 3rd or home and they may adjust their movements to have primary coverage at HP if they feel they have a better opportunity than U1 to provide the best coverage.
