So equipment for me means it don’t hurt when I get hit. I got some starter gear at the first clinic I attended. In my 2nd year I upgraded the shin guards mask and chest protector. The shin guards have an extra cap the knee to cover the split between knee and leg. The chest protector I got has solid protection on the shoulders and for a mask I went with the light weight one.
The point is get the protection you are comfortable with its not a great feeling being back there worried about whether that little girl can catch or stop the pitch also it looks great not to be bailing.
So where to get the gear. Well the is equipment available through the clinic in April. Home Run Sports carries a complete selection of gear plate shoes to shirts. Problem is that they aren’t so committed to serving the umpire community. I have had problems in the past getting them to order in stuff for me from Winnipeg and the selection on site was inadequate (perhaps my size is the issue). In any event Geoff last year took an order from anyone wishing equipment , a mass order which was much more satisfactory that dealing with the local outlet. If any of the order wasn’t satisfactory we have the option to return it to the local outlet for full refund. Here’s a bonus my new pants were so long I made two pair out of one. I also shopped at Tuxedo for brushes and counters.I found the metal counters don’t take much pressure to bend them
