Hi. I used to play competitive fastball back in my younger days. Now that my kids are old enough, I want to get active again. I want to give back to the sport, but I have been gone for so long. What if everything has changed? Is the rulebook 10x larger than it was when I played? How hard is the exam. I don’t want to stress out over the exam. Do I get to study? Is it open book?

The exam is what worries me the most.

Cindy: Glad you are interested in umpiring. The exam is very simple, and is True/False. It is open book. We also won’t let anyone fail as we will go through the exam in detail with the class.

There should be no stress about the exam or clinic. It is a fun and open learning environment. We will get you up to speed with any changes in no time.

Don’t be intimidated by the exam. It’s open book and you can do it with others if you choose. The rules will fall into place as you apply them on the diamond. As a former competitive player you will have a very good understanding of the game. See you at the clinic.

Where can I find the Softball Canada rulebook so I can study for the exam? I see that the ASA rulebook is available. It would be nice to take it anywhere with me and I could study on my phone when I have small breaks (like taking the bus)

See the ASA Rulebook at: http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Softball/News/2015/April/06/2015-Official-Rules-now-available-for-App-purchase

I’m sure Softball Canada does the same, but I couldn’t find it.

Cindy, you’ll need the Softball Canada rule book. I have them or the Calgary Minor Softball has them at there office.
